The Spring Colour Edit: How to Choose a Gemstone That Feels Like You
The gemstone that suits you best is usually the colour you keep coming back to, chosen to flatter your skin and set in the gold you love to wear. As a guide, yellow gold with rich stones like garnet and morganite flatters warm skin tones, while white gold with blues and greens is beautiful on cool skin tones.

Spring is my favourite time to talk about colour in the showroom. The light changes, wardrobes soften into pinks, greens and blues, and clients start asking for something a little brighter than their everyday gold. After almost 50 years in jewellery, I've learnt that the right gemstone is rarely the one you think you should choose. It's the one that makes you smile every time it catches the light.
Here's how we help our clients find their colour, whether they're choosing their first gemstone piece or adding to a collection they already love.
1. How do I choose a gemstone colour that suits me?
Start with your skin's undertone. Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural light. If they look greenish, your undertones are usually warm, and if they look blue or purple, they tend to be cool. Warm undertones are flattered by rich garnet, peachy morganite and golden tones, while blue topaz, green amethyst and cooler pinks look beautiful on cool undertones. If you can't tell either way, your undertones are probably neutral, and most colours will suit you.
Then think about your eyes, the colours in your wardrobe and the jewellery you already wear. A stone that picks up your eye colour, suits your favourite outfits and sits well beside your other pieces will be the one you reach for most.
We also find that people are often naturally drawn to a particular stone, and sometimes they don't know why. For centuries, many cultures have believed that gemstones and crystals carry their own energy, and that we're drawn to the one we need at that time in our lives. Whether you see it that way or just love the colour, it's worth listening to that pull, because in our experience it's often the piece you'll treasure most.
2. Which gold should I choose for my gemstone?
The gold you choose changes the way a stone looks. Yellow gold warms the colour and gives pink and green stones a soft, golden glow. White gold keeps blues and greens crisp and cool, so the colour of the stone leads. Rose gold flatters almost every skin tone and is lovely with blue and pink stones. If you wear one metal every day, choosing your gemstone in the same gold makes everything easy to wear together.

3. Can I mix different gemstone colours?
Yes, and spring is the perfect time to try it. Colours that sit side by side in nature, like pink and green, almost always look beautiful together. Our crossover ring is a good example, with a soft green amethyst beside a pink morganite in yellow gold. If you're stacking rings, choose one colour to lead and let the others support it, or keep the same gold throughout so the mix looks intentional.

4. Which gemstones are best for everyday wear?
Gemstones are measured for hardness on the Mohs scale from 1 to 10, with diamond at 10. For rings you wear every day, stones of 7 and above hold up best. Topaz (8), morganite (7.5 to 8), garnet and tourmaline (around 7) and amethyst (7) are all good everyday choices with a little care. Earrings and pendants take far less wear than rings, so they're a lovely way to enjoy bolder colours and softer stones.
5. How do I care for my gemstone jewellery?
Clean your gemstones gently with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then dry them with a soft cloth. Take your rings off before swimming, cleaning, gardening or the gym, and put on perfume and moisturiser before your jewellery. Store each piece separately so harder stones can't scratch softer ones, and keep coloured stones out of strong sunlight for long periods, as some can soften in colour over time. Some gemstones shouldn't go in an ultrasonic cleaner, so please ask us first. We're always happy to clean and check your pieces in the showroom.
6. Why choose a one-of-a-kind gemstone piece?
Every natural gemstone is unique, with its own depth of colour and the tiny characteristics that formed it. All the pieces in our Spring Colour Edit are one of a kind, so once you find your colour, it's truly yours. This is also why we recommend seeing gemstones in person, as the colour changes in daylight, under showroom lights and against your own skin.
Very often, the stone you're drawn to is the one you'll treasure most.

Frequently Asked Questions
What gemstone colour suits warm skin tones?
Rich colours like garnet, peachy morganite and golden tones flatter warm skin tones, especially set in yellow or rose gold. If the veins on your wrist look greenish in natural light, your undertones are usually warm.
What gemstone colour suits cool skin tones?
Blue topaz, green amethyst and cooler pinks look beautiful on cool skin tones, especially set in white gold. If the veins on your wrist look blue or purple in natural light, your undertones are usually cool.
Is green amethyst a real amethyst?
Yes. Green amethyst, also known as prasiolite, is a variety of quartz. Most green amethyst is created by gently heating natural amethyst, which turns its purple colour into a soft, fresh green.
What is morganite?
Morganite is the pink to peach variety of beryl, the same mineral family as emerald and aquamarine. It is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it a good choice for rings.
Is London blue topaz a natural gemstone?
London blue topaz is natural topaz that has been treated to create its deep, inky blue colour. The colour is stable, and at 8 on the Mohs scale, topaz is a durable choice for everyday jewellery.
Why am I drawn to a certain gemstone?
It's very common to be drawn to one stone without knowing why. For centuries, many cultures have believed that gemstones and crystals carry their own energy, and that we're drawn to the one we need at that time. We always say it's worth trusting that instinct.
Where can I see coloured gemstone jewellery on the Gold Coast?
You can see our one-of-a-kind gemstone pieces in our showroom at 2231 Gold Coast Highway, Nobby Beach. Our team will help you compare colours in natural light and find the one that suits you.
