The Spring Racing Jewellery Edit: Finishing Touches for Race Day

The Spring Racing Carnival is one of my favourite times of the year in the showroom. Between charity race days, Pink Ribbon events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the big days at Flemington, clients come in with a dress, a fascinator and one question: what jewellery will finish this beautifully? After almost 50 years in jewellery, my answer is always the same. Choose one piece you love, let it lead, and build the rest of your look gently around it.

Here's how we help our clients put their race-day jewellery together, whether you're heading to Flemington or celebrating closer to home on the Gold Coast.

1. Begin with the outfit

Lay out your dress, shoes and millinery before you choose a single piece of jewellery. Look at where the detail already sits, whether that's a bold print, a sculptural neckline or a fascinator framing one side of your face. Your jewellery should work with that detail rather than compete with it, so a busy print often calls for clean gold, while a simple dress gives you room for colour and sparkle.

2. Choose the piece that leads

Every memorable race-day look has one piece people notice first. It might be a pair of statement earrings, a bold pair of pearl earrings, a pendant at the neckline or a diamond bracelet catching the light as you raise a glass. Start with the piece you're most excited to wear, then let everything else play a supporting role. If you're unsure, take a photo with and without each addition, as the camera is very honest.

3. Pair your earrings with your millinery

Your earrings and fascinator sit side by side, so they're best chosen together. With a detailed or wide-brimmed piece, a refined stud or small drop keeps everything balanced. With a sleek headband or a smaller fascinator, a longer, more sculptural earring can become the hero. Try them on with your hair styled the way you'll wear it on the day, and look from the side as well as the front. A statement pearl earring is a timeless choice here, especially with a classic hat.

4. Bring in colour and warm gold

Spring racing is the perfect time to wear colour. A pink gemstone, emerald or blue topaz can pick up a tone from your dress or add a soft contrast against a neutral outfit. If your outfit is already full of colour, diamonds set in yellow gold let the dress shine while still giving you that finishing sparkle. Mixing yellow and white gold looks wonderfully relaxed when it's done with intention.

5. Keep your bracelets considered

A single tennis bracelet is one of the most elegant things you can wear to the races, and it photographs beautifully in daylight. Pearl bracelets are lovely too, and they stack well with silver or gold bracelets and bangles for a softer look. If you love a stack, begin with one piece and add gradually, keeping in mind your sleeves, your clutch and any rings you'll be wearing. When a stack starts to feel busy, go back to the piece you loved first.

6. Take one final look

Before you leave, put on the complete outfit and step back from the mirror. Notice where your eye goes first, and check it's the detail you wanted people to see. Then check the practical things: earring backs secure, clasps closed and rings sitting comfortably for a long day on your feet.

The best race-day jewellery feels like you. If you love wearing it, it will show in every photo from the day.

If you'd like a second opinion, bring your outfit or a photo into our Nobby Beach showroom and our team will help you put the finishing touches together. We can also clean and check your favourite pieces before the day, so they're sparkling when it counts.
